Weekly Update – Week of May 2-6, 2022

Well folks, we have 14 days left in the school year (but who’s counting?). Now that things seem to be getting back to normal, we are starting to revisit some of the traditions and rituals that make DSA unique. Senior parents have been buzzing about decorating lockers, our first face-to-face musical in three years was a success, and we’re looking forward to our first Fringe Festival since 2019. Things are looking up at DSA.

There’s a lot going on here to close out the year, so please be sure to check your emails as we will be sending lots of information for end of year events, Senior events, and much more.

SHOUT OUTS

Juniors Stacey Baaheth and Cameron Hunt-Clark have been selected to attend the Summer Leadership Experience at the US Military Academy at West Point. The West Point Summer Leader Experience (SLE) provides select rising high school seniors with a week-long immersion into the academic, military, and social life of a cadet. Congrats to these students!

DSA media students brought home the Best In Show title at the DeKalb County High School Film Festival for the 3rd year in a row! The winning film, “Camp Jazz” will be shown at the Iris Bloom Festival on May 14th and Screen on the Green. Congrats to the Camp Jazz crew: Phoebe Sercer ’22, Aidan Barry ’22, and Maurice Clermont ’22.

Please be prepared to share test information with Dr. Knight as she will be completing reports for DCSD and DeKalb DPH.

Attendance

Please arrive to school each day on time. School begins at 8:10 am and students must be in their class and ready to learn at this time. Teachers will close the doors when the bell rings.

Students must also be present and on time to each class, including advisory period.

Students who display habitual tardiness, will receive disciplinary action, including detention and potential removal from the magnet program.

Student Drop-off begins: 7:30 am and students must be picked up by 3:45 pm.

note: Tardy detention is from 7:30-8:00

Dress Code

Keep in mind that DCSD dress code will be enforced during the school day and on school grounds. Some of these dress requirements include, but are not limited to:

– no crop tops/short shirts or exposed midriffs

– no sagging pants or pants worn below the waist

– shorts/skirts/dresses must be longer than extended fingertips

– pants/bottoms must not have holes, rips, or tears above the knee

– open-toed shoes must have a rear strap that is worn at all times. No flip-flops or slides

Parents, thank you in advance for helping our students adhere to dress requirements. Students who cannot adhere to dress code requirements will be asked to call home and change and may face disciplinary action.

Food Deliveries and Lunch Period

In order to ensure the safety of our students, please be advised food deliveries from outside vendors (Uber Eats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, etc.) are not permitted during school hours for students. We appreciate your partnership in this matter.

Also, lunch can now ONLY be eaten in the Cafeteria, Cafeteria Hallway, and the Senior Courtyard. Students will not be allowed to eat on the 200 and/or 300 halls and will not be allowed to go to their cars during lunch.
